Create ‘positive tipping points’ with climate mandates, governments urged
Requiring key sectors to switch to clean energy by specific times could trigger benevolent cascades, report claimsIn the terminology of the climate and ecological crises the phrase “tipping point” is loaded with dreadful implications. It evokes a climate breakdown supercharged by the mass escape of methane locked in Siberian permafrost, or the great currents of the oceans smothered by freshwater melting from the Greenland ice sheet, or the Amazon turning from great rainforest to parch -
National Grid offers new contracts to manage winter energy demand
National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) has introduced new demand turn-up and generation turn-down contracts as part of its flexibility strategy for winter.
These contracts are being offered in three regions: the South West, South Wales and the Midlands, totalling 2,811MWh.
They aim to help NGED’s Distribution Systems Operator manage the grid by balancing energy supply and demand. The contracts are designed for operators of flexible energy assets, allowing them to increase demand or r -

UK ‘zombie’ projects axed to free up grid space
Electricity network operators have cancelled 10GW of stalled connection projects, often referred to as “zombie” schemes, according to figures released by the Energy Networks Association (ENA).This is part of a wider effort by the ENA’s Strategic Connections Group to free up grid capacity and accelerate the connection process. The initiative has targeted speculative or delayed projects, which were identified by regulators last year as a barrier to progress.
The removal of these p -

Weatherwatch: Labour’s stance on nuclear power is worryingly familiar
There is little difference between this government’s and its Conservative predecessor’s policies on expansionThere seems to be no difference between Conservative and Labour policies on nuclear power. Both support the current building of Hinkley Point C in Somerset, the planned Sizewell C station in Suffolk, an unspecified number of small modular reactors all over Britain as well as the far-off dream of nuclear fusion. However, few scientists serious about the threat of the climate cri -
Power Blackout in the Balkans
When a System FailsOn 21 June 2024, four Balkan countries were struck by a seemingly random power outage triggered by undefined causes. This left the people of Albania, Bosnia, Croatia, and Montenegro without power for a then-unknown amount of time.Unfortunately, this remains a common situation today, even despite the largely modern world we’re currently living in. Luckily, power was returned to many areas after only a few hours, although recovery usually takes considerably longer. The targ -

Energy from waste facility powers nearly 40k homes
The EnviRecover Energy from Waste facility in Worcestershire has generated one million megawatts of energy from waste that would have otherwise gone to landfill.
This amount of energy is enough to power nearly 40,000 homes each year since its opening. The facility processes approximately 210,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste each year, equivalent to over three million large wheelie bins.
This consists of around 170,000 tonnes of residential waste and 40,000 tonnes of commercial waste from the tw -

UK energy bills to increase next week as price cap goes up
The energy price cap will increase from 1st October, leading to higher energy bills for households in England, Scotland and Wales.
The new cap is set to rise due to an increase in wholesale gas prices, which has prompted the rise in costs. From this date, households can expect their energy bills to increase by an average of £12 per month.
The price cap sets a maximum limit on the amount suppliers can charge per unit of energy but does not limit the total bill, as households will still pay f -
UK Government oil and gas revenues drop by £2.9bn

Why corn ethanol is worse for the climate than petrol
Ethanol made from maize has been touted as a green fuel, but a closer look at its production puts paid to this claimEthanol made from corn was touted as a clean, renewable fuel for vehicles. Because the maize plants absorb carbon dioxide as they grow they were deemed environmentally friendly, and this is now big business in the US where billions of gallons of ethanol are blended into nearly all petrol supplies. The problem is that actually ethanol is worse for the climate than petrol.
